Hi Beryl
I am new to breeding I own a Holmes Hanover mare Homin the
shade I am not breeding to supply the yearling sales to race
the offspring myself I have a yearling colt by Magic rule a
globe Derby line stallion and Homin the shade is in foal to
Tintin in America now was wondering what your thought are on
these crosses .
Cheers
Matthew
Hi Matthew, congratulations on obtaining a nice broodmare – she was a good racehorse herself and has left a couple (by Falcon Seelster and Elsu) who went on to race well in Australia. And her 3yo Jet Black Shadow (by Jereme’s Jet) is racing locally here in Cambridge for Nicky Chilcott for a 421 formline from as many starts! I like the way you know what you are breeding for, really important to set your goals and your are allowing yourself scope to try some very different options, rather than the commercial, imported sires. I don’t know what type of mare she is, and I do think choosing sires take that into account a lot (temperament and type). I’m not an expert, and can’t tell you much more than what pedigree matching software like Tesio could, in terms of the crosses. I would much rather hear what brought you to those decisions – that would be great to share, if you are willing.
Just a few other thoughts – I respect what supporters were trying to achieve with Magic Rule and keep the Logan Derby sire line going, and I would love to see one of his last foals jump up and win heaps of races. But sometimes the failure of siring lines to develop tells us something, and Magic Rule’s family was not as strong as I would like to see in a sire. Tintin’s is much stronger and brings proven family speed to the table. The fact that Homin The Shade’s previous good progeny were by Falcon Seelster (very compatible with Tintin’s family) and Elsu (from his family) could be a good sign too. Your mare’s grandamsire Armbro Del is an interesting character. His broodmare sire credits include some top trotters like Chiola Cola and Bellam as well as pacers like Armalight, Brabham and Dictatorship. It’s not uncommon to find in pedigrees this mix of trotting and pacing branches, and Tintin In America has the same thing with Chiola Hanover – the family has good trotting branches currently active, and Now And Zen (his grandam) has been bred equally to trotting and pacing sires.
Hi Bee
Thanks for your response Homin the shade is a solid mare around 15 15.1 h very much a Holmes type she has a relaxed sensible nature I choose to put her to magic rule as from the photos I have seen on him he was a strongly built correct type and the foal my father had at the time was a stunning colt. Since Homin the shade and magic rule cross was 3×3 to smooth fella I felt it was worth doing and I feel for the globe derby society to have a chance of keeping the sire line going someone needed to take a chance with a more commercial mare. My reason for going to Tintin in America was I wanted to inject some high speed into the family with Homin the shade leaving two good preforming sons by Elsu and Falcon seelster Tintin seemed like a good option without spending a fortune to do so .
Thanks

That’s great Matthew. Thanks. You’ve thought about your breeding that is exactly what b4breeding (think – before breeding) supports and encourages. I like what you say. You are looking at the mare you have, what a sire is leaving, what the family likes…. Congratulations. That means the foal on the ground has some good things going for it. What happens after that is a whole new story. I would love to be blogging about your Magic Rule foal or your Tintin foal in the future, so keep in touch.
Hi Bee,
I was one of the very lucky syndicate members that raced Tintin In America. What a ride we had, really exciting times having also been in the Changeover syn.
Bee ,I was fortunate enough to be lent the Presidential Ball mare Style By The Mile from Paul Kerr.I put her to Tintin In America. I now have a beautiful filly called American Vogue who is in her 3rd prep. She is being trained by Paul Kerr . He said she’s doing every thing right at this stage. The only other foal to race from the mare named Macintosh has won 10 races from 20 starts.
I went to Tintin because he suited by budget, plus hopefully putting a bit more speed into a very nice family. Both maternal sides of the filly are stacked with winners, especially times wise, mile rates etc.
Bee, I just like your thoughts on this mating.
Cheers Colin Harris.
Good on you, Colin, I love the breeding of your filly American Vogue. Not only has she got much admired and well proven performers in her maternal line, but she also comes with a stack of Old Maid/Spinster influences right through the pedigree which the Tintin family loves – that was a steer given to me very early on by Aria Small, and I have found it a very good compass.
Matthew
I would continue to take the mare to sons of Falcon Seelster like Attorney General, McArdle, The Falcon Strike, Elsu as well as some of the Western Hanover sons like Badlands Hanover and Jereme’s Jet.
I have bred a few Holmes Hanover horses like TK Swift, TH Saracen and TK Sabre to name a few and I have daughters from Holmes mares out of the Ceremonial Family and one thing they all need is injection of speed – Falcon Seelster and his sons and grandsons produce a nice magic cross over them – no pun intended
