Usually with the virtual yearling stables competition I ask you to pick a certain number of yearlings from the sales that you think will do well, and then we follow their progress.
But this time I want to develop a combined virtual stable based on interesting breeding. So this is a collaborative effort, not an individual competition.
The ‘pool” of yearlings includes the 2015 Sales of the Stars sales in New Zealand (the Australasian and the Premier), and also the APG sales yearling sales in Australia (Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney), and the South Australia Yearling Sales. All the catalogues are available online (see links below) as well as hard copies.
Maximum of two yearlings per person please. Give their Lot Number and either APG or Sales of the Stars.
I’m looking for yearlings that have an interesting breeding match. By interesting I mean the match is trying something “outside the square”, or perhaps involving close double ups or following a pedigree matching theory which is more than just “breed the best to the best and hope for the best”.
I would also like us to have some newish sires (or newish damsires) in the stable, where you think the match is particularly interesting or well thought out.
Please include a short explanation for your choices. There must be something about the match that is interesting or intriguing.
You can include yearlings you have bred yourself so long as they fit the other criteria.
And your name, please.
Nominations close 31 January 2015.

Catalogues at APG website and PGG Wrightson Sale of the Stars website and SA Yearling sale (only 16 yearlings) http://www.saharness.com/2015-sa-yearling-sale.html
My nominations
I’ll start the ball rolling with:
- APG Lot 467 A filly by Major In Art out of the Perfect Art mare Sunopal. That makes the full brothers Art Major and Perfect Art 2×2 in the pedigree and Artsplace and Perfect Profile both 3×3. As far as I can see, that is the first time such a combination has been tried.
- Sale of the Stars Lot 417 A Muscle Mass colt by the good trotting broodmare Princess Della whom I have written about previously. She is by Last Lord (a son of Lordship, who was one of the last remnants of the Johnny Globe/Globe Derby siring line in New Zealand) and is the only Last Lord mare who is breeding. Princess Della is now 25 years old and this is her 10th foal. The match is complete outcross of sturdy colonial lines with the latest American trotting speed.
Include the SA Yearling sale only 16 yearlings http://www.saharness.com/2015-sa-yearling-sale.html
Yes – thanks for providing the link. The idea is to get our “sharp eyes” looking for some interesting pedigree matches. So I welcome the extra input.
lot 210 art major-Catherine zeta, artsplace line over jate lobell is a top cross
Mmmmm. A “top cross” is not really the “interesting or intriguing” type of thing I am looking for. I’m also a bit wary of so-called crosses of gold for what are prolific top sires and outstanding broodmare sires who probably have large numbers of quality foals on the ground – such as Artsplace and Jate Lobell did in America. Of course an outstanding example of this cross is the new sire Sportswriter. So rather than give the credit for this Sale of the Stars Lot 210 match to the Artsplace and Jate Lobell lines, I would note the specific Art Major x Village Jasper cross as a particularly interesting one. Village Jasper wasn’t a big sire here (just over 200 live foals in the 7 years he was available, compared to much bigger crops in Australia). His NZ results included Easton Alliance who raced at the top level in North America and is breeding (with limited success to date) over there. Village Jasper has a few good NZ-bred broodmares who have crossed well with a range of sires, not just the Artsplace line. Look at Pachacuti (by Bettor’s Delight)from the NZ-bred Village Jasper mare Tirol’s Ziray, Supersonic Miss (by Mach Three) and Tanabi Bromac (by Live Or Die). But you are right, the cross of Village Jasper broodmares with Art Major so far in New Zealand is producing some good results from small numbers:
Foal Age Colour Sex Best Mile Rates Mare/Sire
Unregistered 0 B F Jass/Art Major
Alleluia 4 BR G 1.58.2,S* Shy Annie/Art Major
Brother In Arms 1 B C Shy Annie/Art Major
Fight For Glory 3 B F 1.55.8,S* Breath Of Life/Art Major
She’s An Angel 2 B F Shy Annie/Art Major
Soldier Of Fortune 3 B C Shy Annie/Art Major
The Artristocrat 1 B C Catherine Zeta/Art Major
In Australia, because of the popularity of Art Major and the larger number of Village Jasper mares, the cross is more common. But although there have been some good ones (Lettucefib, Man Of Art, Nediak, changing Code, Rogers Joy,Tasmanian Bromac) they are not showing up as a “cross of gold”. Interestingly, nor is the cross of Village Jasper mares with Grinfromeartoear who of course had great success with mares by Village Jasper’s sire Jate Lobell such as Mr Feelgood, Mister Big, Laugh Out Loud. Catherine Zeta’s first foal, the very consistent NZ performer Provocative Prince, is one of the Grinfromeartoear x Village Jasper crosses which has been successful here.
my two picks are APG lot 126 and APG lot 194, APG LOT 126 is a mirror image bred horse ,just look at his pedigree, this colts great grand sire is the same as his grand dams sire ,his sires dam is by the same sire of his dam’s grand sire, 3 crosses of abercrombie and 2 crosses of niatross. APG LOT 194 As you know that GRINFROMEARTOEAR crosses very well with JATE LOBELL mares ,This is interesting as the grand sires dam SMILE UPON is by the same sire as the dam’s grand dam TROPEZ LOBELL (storm damage) this cross was popular in america and had some impact. This horse also has a double dose of JATE LOBELL 3×3
Well spotted Barry thanks for that – they go in our virtual stable.
Also i was looking at the new zealand sales the blue sale (first one) there is 15 yearlings in there that have 6 crosses of MEADOW SKIPPER as close as you can get just an interesting find
[…] Good on Brian Cowley for adding his selection into the collaborative “virtual yearling stable“. […]
[…] That’s another reason I like this colt. I’m keen to have him in our “interesting and innovative pedigrees” virtual stable. […]
