The following are a series of articles written later 2014 and early 2015 for Harnessed (the official publication of Harness Racing New Zealand) and reproduced here with its permission so readers who are not subscribers to Harnessed can enjoy them. These are PDF files which will each open in a new window.
They look back at past races involving top or up-and-coming fillies and mares, and track how those mares went on as broodmares. The latest one, looks at the new sires of 10 years ago and their siring careers here in New Zealand.

hi Bee,
I was reading your blogs from the Harnessed articles and noticed you missed that Blossom Lady won the NZ Cup in 1992. She managed to produce Mister D G, a $500k winner of Stakes, of her two daughters, “In Bloom” is doing an ok job so far.
I also noticed that Adio Routine , has two grand-daughters doing a nice job, Delightful Song and Miss Lisa, her half sister in Marnie McGuire produced Mach Dynasty in Australia ,I have the other half sister Meadowlands Dream with one filly foal to date. Meadowlands Dream has been served by my young stallion Magic Indy Eyre, as well as Pipes Of Pan (a mare who’s family hasn’t gone onto much as yet).
I also noticed also you have mentioned Fear Me and her daughter Quote Me in your blog which is from the Reflection family to which will hopefully keep the Nanoose side going strong.. I have Flirt With Me who has just foaled the first filly foal by my young stallion and who has produced runners. I see your “The Blue Lotus” is on the other side of the family, which is going really strong at the moment. Essbedoubleyou (Presidential Ball -Went Motoring) won a group 2 at Menangle in 1:52.0 and is in the top 20 fastest winning miles in Australia this past season. He maybe another future sire to join Tintin In America and Elsu from that side of the family.
For space reasons I had to cut down the information I put in the article but my original version noted: “If Tigerish gave her lineage a flying start as a with 12 foals, her 1994 Cup colleague Blossom Lady created a big handicap by producing only three live foals before she died in 2004. Two foals were fillies – In Bloom and Bloss’s Flame – and her only colt was the underestimated Mister DG who achieved 20 wins and almost $800,000. Neither of her daughters were stars on the race track, taking 30 or so starts to get a couple of wins. Tim and Andrea Butt have picked up the breeding of In Bloom and sent her to quality sires. With a 2yo Bettor’s Delight filly and a yearling Rocknroll Hanover filly on the ground, there is a wee bit of hope that Blossom Lady’s wonderful qualities might show up in a descendent at some stage.”
Yes, Blossom Lady did win the Cup in 1992 but for my article I drew the line at 1994. What a fantastic mare she was, one of my favourites of all time.
Thanks for the update on Adio Routine’s family. The HRNZ database has Meadowlands Dream being served by Extreme Ghees (a half to Magic Indy Eyre) in 2012 and he is down in their records as a 5yo gelding! I am interested to know more about why you are breeding mares to your own stallions and what is behind the maternal line you are using. What’s your aim with this venture? Is it to support the old “colonial” maternal lines and the Lordship sire line? Are you putting them in training or is this just a breeding venture?
It is an attempt to revive the Lordship sire line. Extreme Ghees was leased out for racing but came to nothing, probably because I didn’t have a lot to do with him as a very young horse. Gelded him to see if that was fixable. Have bred with Piping Hot General (Attorney General x Pipes Of Pan) as he was leased out to Craig and Jan Hamilton who had him at trailing stage when he fell during a training run . They said he was talented and don’t waste him. They sent him back so I need to him. Sold the only mare that had a filly so will have to breed again so I have some test crosses with Magic Indy Eyre. In the long run would like gather what left of the Lordship /Strathmore line , breed a number of mares to each, sell with most of the proceeds to set up a listed race for the sire line worth something. Do need help with this and would hopefully accomplish the “Global Revival”.
