Introducing my yearlings grown up and almost ready to go.

This time of the year is the “sneaky peek at the presents”. In this case not Christmas presents but the yearlings that will be up for sale in February 2016 – and it is a very interesting catalogue, thank heavens, after a drought for a couple of years.

Introducing you to my two yearlings, whom I have blogged about before as they developed.

It seems such a long time since I saw “Leo” (Shadow Play x The Blue Lotus) and Taffey (Rock N Roll Heaven x Zenterfold) as shy foals alongside their much loved mums.

Here they are now with only weeks to go before the yearling sale in February at Karaka. They are teenagers with personality and bodies that are well enough developed to show off type and character.

Luckily I have two lovely ones to put up and heartfelt thanks to the mares Zenterfold and her daughter The Blue Lotus.

The Shadow Play colt is well grown, athletic and has personality plus, a guy with a sense of play but wanting to have something to do. He will come up as a 2yo but if someone has the patience, he will be so much better as a 3yo. I love this colt. He is so interested in life, loves being around people and even not fazed by standing right outside our house rather than in a paddock. He is curious, learns fast, he thinks.

Here are two more personal photos for my blog followers about The Snow Leopard (Shadow Play x The Blue Lotus).

Similar for my filly from Zenterfold, will follow.

Morning drizzle and then clouds cleared to blue skies and sunshine, and the families were out in force at the Harness Waikato meeting today – horses well outnumbered by excited kids of all shapes and sizes chasing each other across the sloping lawn (best view to catch the race and keep an eye on the kids), and sulkies were almost outnumbered by prams and pushchairs!

This was an afternoon where you didn’t even need bouncy castles and balloon man, as the kids just made their own entertainment, aided with complex modern technologies like…ah..the bocks you have to climb up to show 1st, 2nd and 3rd for greyhound post-race photographs, or the long stretch of grass alongside the home straight where future Olympians may be in front of our eyes. Yes, kids just doing it for themselves.

And of course the total winner on the day, the Clerk Of The Course Horse, who always draws the younger fans.

Fantastic racing too, from the younger generation who showed off their skills with their trotting ponies in the Kidz Kartz races, to the younger drivers who were competing in the tote races.

Very cool, and thanks to everyone involved.

It’s been pouring with rain most of the day, and our four weanings have been stoically waiting it out. Then at last a break in the weather! And oh boy, the Rock N Roll Heaven filly just couldn’t hold herself back. How could the Shadow Play colt not be in awe?

I blinked, and suddenly those cute wee foals are personalities on agile legs! On the right, having a run around the paddock this evening, is my Rock N Roll Heaven x Zenterfold filly, and on the left is my Shadow Play x The Blue Lotus colt. (The Blue Lotus is also a daughter from Zenterfold.) Both about about 4 months old.

On purpose, both Kym and I took a year out from breeding in 2012 and hence no yearlings going to the sale this time from any of our mares. However I wish all the best to those who are selling in the upcoming yearling sales.

Daughter and dam enjoy some baylage at Isa Lodge. This is Sun Isa and her Pegasus Spur filly foal, a tall and strong looking type.

An early dry summer in many parts of New Zealand means supplementary feeding out is already under way in many places.

Sun Isa and foal

Yum yum yum – a treat after a hot day.

In the Waikato we are fortunate to have had a couple of timely downpours to feed the grass roots, so mostly the paddocks are standing up well. But it is good to know we have plenty of baylage and hay on hand at Isa Lodge to help take the pressure off the paddocks.

Pegasus Spur filly foal from Sun Isa.

Ahhhh….

Sun Isa is 16 hands herself, and leaves striking looking tall foals. The filly is no exception. She is a full sister to Flying Isa, being by Pegasus Spur. Sun Isa is back in foal to Angus Hall.

Lovely to see this young Rock N Roll Heaven filly hooning around the big rolling paddock at Breckon Farms when I visited this morning.

With her is dam Zenterfold – who enjoyed two apples and a good scratch.

Toggle (Britewell x Isa Countessa) is proving to be a great mum for her adventurous, bold 3 month old Majestic Son filly foal.

This afternoon foal and mum got a walk around our property, led by breeder Kym Kearns, and the highlight for the filly was her first experience with a rotary clothesline!

Here’s a photo showing her fascination with some striped pyjamas. Maybe she’s connecting with that old song: “..still looks like a horse in striped pyjamas” although this girl is not zebra!
