Kym Kearns describes this colt as probably the best type her mare Sun Isa has produced to date, and that’s a big call since the siblings have all been very good-looking horses.

Angus Hall x Sun Isa yearling colt.

Isa The Great

Isa The Great after his weekend wash.

“Hank” as we call him, is the 6th foal from Sundon mare Sun Isa and her 4th son. She leaves strikingly good-looking horses, big and bold, and with plenty of ability.

Kym retained the previous foal, a filly named Library Lady, who is now a very strong 2yo with a lovely trotting action.

Previous foals from Sun Isa are: Flying Isa (56 starts, 17 wins, $481,667), Isa Smiling (very talented, 3 wins, now dam of a 2yo colt), Angus Fogg (late developing but talented 5yo trained by Derek Balle), Isa Flyer (died recently in paddock accident),  Library Lady, and Isa The Great. The first four foals were all sold at the PGG Wrightson yearling sales, and that is where Isa The Great is heading to.

The Pegasus Spur x Sun Isa colt bred by Kym Kearns is the new Australasian record holder for the mile trot.

As Michael Guerin says, it indicates how unlucky he was to miss a spot in the big trot on Interdominion day.

Congratulations to the owners, some of whom bought the full brother at the Karaka yearling sales three weeks ago.

Isa Lodge has two yearlings this year, both colts.
One is from pacing mare Zenterfold, the other from trotting mare Sun Isa.

That makes them a half brother to Tintin In America, and a full brother to Flying Isa.

You can see photos, profiles and insights into the families and the breeding choices on the two new pages which also show as tabs at the top of my blog. There’s even some background about the names.

Of interest might also be Amazon Lily, a Bettor’s Delight yearling filly bred by The Blue Lotus Syndicate (Ken Breckon, Dom Zame, Bee Pears and Kym Kearns) and she is Lot 34 in the Breckon Farms draft.

The Blue Lotus is a daughter of Zenterfold, and a half sister to “Milo”, and was 3rd in the Sires Stakes Group 1 Final as a 3yo behind Carabella and Under cover Lover. She is currently in foal to Shadow Play.

View also the recent very good recent win from Flying Isa on HRNZ website – “Bert” is his full brother.

Manicure, shower and massage for two of our mares yesterday as we moved them from one of our “virtual farm” paddocks to another.

Who is this rather handsome looking mare getting a hoof trim and wash by owner Kym Kearns?

It’s 26 year-old Isa Countessa (Krissy) the much loved dam of Sun Isa and so  grandam of Flying Isa (the colt who won the Australasian 2yo Trotters Breeders Crown in 2011).

The bottom two photos are of my mare The Blue Lotus, whose pedigree was shown in the last blog.  Her first foal took a lot out of her, and it has been a work-in-progress to get her condition and confidence back up. She’s feeling a lot better now that she’s got her figure back!

The Blue Lotus aka Lottie wants a bit more attention please!

Looking after your mares is such an important part of breeding. You cannot expect them to deliver unless you put the time, effort and nutrients into them – or make sure good people are doing so on your behalf.

Our mares have been very good to us, and in return we are good to them.

Here’s a photo that captures the joie de vivre of young horses, given a bit of sunshine in the middle of winter.

The happy chappy is a weanling colt from bred by Kym Kearns at Isa Lodge, and a full brother to Flying Isa (Pegasus Spur x Sun Isa), and is aptly named Isaputtingonmytophat, after the song “Top hat, white tie and tails” made famous by the likes of Fred Astaire, Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald, but originally written by Irving Berlin.

The full lyrics are below the photo. But I love the line “And I trust that you’ll excuse my dust when I step on the gas…”

Top Hat, White Tie and Tails

I just got an invitation through the mails:
“Your presence requested this evening, it’s formal
A top hat, a white tie and tails”
Nothing now could take the wind out of my sails
Because I’m invited to step out this evening
With top hat, white tie and tails

I’m putting on my top hat
Tying up my white tie
Brushing off my tails

I’m dudeing up my shirt front
Putting in the shirt studs
Polishing my nails

I’m stepping out, my dear
To breathe an atmosphere that simply reeks with class
And I trust that you’ll excuse my dust when I step on the gas

For I’ll be there
Putting down my top hat
Mussing up my white tie
Dancing in my tails.
